View an Online Presentation on Golf Applications for Zenith Zoysia Seed

Zenith Zoysia is a product of the Patten Seed Company. For more information please use our Contact Form.

1. Is there an affordable way to convert my golf course fairways to zoysia?
Yes, now you can convert your fairways to superior zoysiagrass by seeding with Zenith zoysiagrass seed.
2. What is the cost of converting from my present fairway grasses to zenith?
Depending upon the kind of grass you are presently growing, costs average around $0.02 per sq. ft. or $870.00 per acre.
3. Can I convert bermudagrass fairways to Zenith zoysiagrass?
Yes. Common bermudagrass fairways convert more easily than hybrid bermudagrass and use of spot treatments of selective bermudagrass growth inhibitors is recommended.
4. Will I have to stop play on fairways while in transition?
Yes. Play is generally resumed in 8 to 10 week and cart traffic is kept off until fairways are completely covered. Minimal cart traffic on fairways always is better for fairway turf.
5. Why Zenith zoysiagrass from seed and not zoysia sod?
Cost is the most evident answer. Cost to establish one acre of fairway with sod, not including preparation, is between $12,000 and $15,000. Seeding costs around $870.00.
6. Why should I change my golf course fairways to zoysiagrass?
Zoysiagrass fairways provide the best surface for golf available today and cost less to maintain than most other options. Players like the way the ball sits up, even when grass is dormant in winter.
7. Doesn’t zoysiagrass turn brown in the winter?
Yes, but the playing surface, unlike dormant bermudagrass, continue to sit the ball up for players.
8. Does zoysiagrass grow well in deep shade?
No. There is no golf quality warm season grass that provides an acceptable playing surface in deep shade. Zoysiagrass will grow in moderate shade if the root zone is well drained.
9. How does the cost of maintaining a zoysiagrass fairway differ from a cool season grass fairway?
It is estimated that the approximate annual maintenance cost of a cool season grass (perennial rye/bluegrass) is $2,075 while the same acre of zoysiagrass fairway costs approximately $515.00 – or about 75% less than the cool season fairway.
10. How far north can Zenith zoysiagrass be grown?
Zenith is performing well from the Caribbean to the upper transition zone from Kansas to St. Louis to Cincinnati to Maryland. Much of the work on Zenith establishment in fairways was conducted from Indianapolis IN south.
11. Why Zenith zoysiagrass seed and not common zoysiagrass seed?
Tests over many states have rated Zenith zoysiagrass turf established from seed as significantly better in quality, uniformity, color and other golf turf traits than common zoysia. Zenith has tested better than many of the classic turfgrasses established only from sod like Meyer as well.
12. Will Zenith grow in low wet soils?
Not very well. Suggest correcting drainage problems before planting Zenith. These areas are generally troubled areas that carts and players make worse during the season. Establishing Zenith is a good way to correct these areas.
13. Is Zenith a big nitrogen user like other warm season grasses such as hybrid and seeded bermudagrass?
No. In fact one of the features that keeps maintenance costs down is that Zenith grows best on low nitrogen application – in the range of 2 to 3 pounds annually while bermudagrass grows best when receiving ¾ to 1 pound of actual nitrogen per acre per month.
14. Are diseases more of a problem with zoysiagrass than cool season grasses in fairways?
No. In fact one of the reasons courses are changing to zoysia from cool season is to save fungicide costs. One course reported that after converting to zoysia form Rye/Blue fairways that they realized about $30,000 in fungicide spray savings – more than enough to pay for the conversion seed costs.
15. Will Zenith survive winters in the upper transition zones?
Yes. To date no Zenith zoysia has been reported lost to winter temperatures.
16. Why plant a grass on my golf course that goes dormant in cold weather?
All warm season grasses go dormant in late fall through early spring – the further north the longer the dormancy period. Remember that most play occurs in spring summer and fall – when zoysiagrasses can provide a far superior playing surface while not requiring the heavy watering (muddy conditions) frequent mowing and restricted access of cool season grasses. In a nut shell this grass is green when you need it to be green and when dormant maintenance costs go almost to $0.00.
17. Will weeds be a problem with a Zenith zoysia fairway?
No. In fact weed control will be easier and less costly – with minimized risk of turf damage and zoysiagrass fairways are more environmentally friendly. Healthy zoysiagrass turf is famous for being so dense that weeds cannot compete reducing the need for herbicides.
18. How does Zenith zoysiagrass compare to cool season grasses in their effect on the environment?
Zenith zoysiagrass surfaces are environmentally friendly because they require less fertility, less mowing, fewer fungicide and herbicide applications. And most importantly Zenith zoysiagrass fairways will require less water by as much as 50% from cool season grass fairways.
19. How long will it take to convert my fairways to Zenith from seed?
The average we see is 14 to 16 weeks to full coverage. Research has proven in the upper Midwest that seed planted by June 1, would result in 90% cover in 90 days when following the grow-in program recommended.
20. Will I have to change any of my equipment to grow Zenith zoysiagrass fairways?
Yes. We strongly recommend that fairway mowers have 9 or more reel blades for the best and smoothest cut.
